Regulation of Postgraduate Studies

Stage of Postgraduate Studies The credit hours system is applied to the stage of postgraduate studies where the postgraduate students have the same system as the bachelor students in terms of admission, adding and deleting materials, following-up, and the exam correction system that has been mentioned previously in the stage of bachelor. Stage of Diploma Aswan University grants postgraduate studies diploma according to the suggestion of the faculty’s council and the recommendation of the competent scientific department, at the following engineering disciplines: – Electrical Engineering: -High Voltage -Electrical Forces -Electrical Machines -Automatic Control -Mechanical Engineering: Design of pipelines and turbines New and Renewable energy Mechanical Design Materials Technology and Production. Conditions of admission for diploma stage:
  • the student has to obtain a bachelor’s degree in engineering from one of the Egyptian universities or an equivalent degree from a recognized scientific college.
  • The duration of study to obtain any postgraduate diplomas has to be two years (4 semesters) otherwise, the study hours haven’t to be less than 15 hours weekly.
  • A well as to obtain the diploma student has to complete 50 credit hours.
  • The schedules of postgraduate studies for each diploma determine the name of the academic course and its hours.
  • The faculty’s council determines the scientific content for the academic courses according to the recommendation of the council of the supervising department on the diploma.
  • The exams of postgraduate diplomas are held twice a year (once per semester) at the dates that are determined by the university’s council upon the suggestion of the faculty’s council.
Stage of Master A student has to obtain a bachelor’s degree in engineering from one of the Egyptian universities or a degree equals to it from a recognized scientific faculty, besides the other conditions that had been determined by the university in order to admission to the Engineering Master’s degree. The required duration to get an engineering’s master has to be at least two years since the enrollment of a student with 60 hours; it is divided into two stages: 1- Enrollment Stage (Preparatory stage): 1-For the registration, the student has to be a full-time study but the faculty’s council can exempt the student from this condition upon the suggestion of the council of the competent department. 2-The enrollment for a master’s degree is done during October month per year. 3-The student studies a theoretical study for one year(two semesters)5 elective courses from schedules of postgraduate studies of the Master in addition to English language and is calculated at 36 credit hours. 4-The exams of masters are held once a year according to the dates that are determined by the council of post-graduate studies and research and upon the suggestion of the faculty’s council. 5-A student who fails in one or more courses can apply to it the next year but if he fails again in the same course his registration will be canceled. 2-Registration stage (Laboratory study): 1-The student can’t move from the enrollment stage to the registration stage unless he doesn’t pass the preparatory year’s exam. 2-The faculty’s council assigns a professor to supervise a thesis upon the suggestion of the council of the competent department; and in the case, there are no professors the council has the right to assign one of the assistant professors for the supervision.  3-It is allowed to multitude supervisors among the academic staff and in this case, the professors can participate in the supervision in the case the student conducts research at the same department of the external supervisor after the approval of the faculty’s council. 4-At the end of the academic year, the supervisor presents a report about the progress of the student in the research to the council of the department and this is report is presented to the faculty’ council and the council of the postgraduate studies and research upon the suggestion of the faculty’ council, 5-The post-gradut studies and research council can cancel the enrollment of the student in the light of this is report. The enrollment of student is canceled if the duration of his thesis’s registration has passed five years and he didn’t obtain the degree unless the faculty’s council approved to keep the registration for another year upon the suggestion of the report of the supervisor or the supervising body of mission after taking the opinion of the competent department. 6-The supervisor or supervisors of the thesis present a report after finishing preparing it regarding its validity to the relevant department council, to be presented to the Judiciary Committee with the suggestion on forming a committee of the judgment in preparation for the presentation to the faculty’s council. 7-The Judiciary committee of the thesis is consisting of three members one of them is the supervisor of the mission and the two others members from the specialists of the university and the different research institutes, the two members or one of them can be from assistant professors or one of the specialists has the same scientific degree. 8-In the case of there is more than one supervisor for the thesis some or all the supervision body presents one common report. In all conditions, one member of the committee has to be at least from outside the university. 9-A public discussion is held to judge on the thesis and the members of the committee present individual and  collective scientific report about the thesis and the outcome of the judgment. All the reports have to be presented first to the department’s council and then to the faculty’s council in preparation for the presentation and finally to the university’s council. 10-It is properly for a student who doesn’t obtain the degree to re-present the thesis by re-convening the public debate or presenting another thesis upon the authorization of the faculty’s council.
