Establishing the First Free Addiction Treatment Center

Within the joint cooperation between Aswan University headed by Prof. Ayman Mahmoud Othman-Acting of Aswan University President and the Addiction Control and Treatment Fund at the Ministry of Social Solidarity. On Wednesday Dr.Ayman Mahmoud Othman met Dr. Amr Othman -Assistant of the Minister of Social Solidarity and Director of the Addiction Control and Treatment Fund and the accompanying delegation in the attendance of Dr. Muhammad Zaki Al-Dahshoury-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Director of Aswan University Hospitals, and Dr. Ashraf Maebad-Excutive Manager of Aswan University Hospitals. Dr. Ayman Othman confirmed the importance of fruitful cooperation between the Ministry of Social Solidarity that’s represented in Addiction Control and Treatment Fund and Aswan University and its hospitals which launched the initiative of the Addiction Control and Treatment Fund Project to serve the people of the Aswan government, especially the governorate needs to that center to treat the patients of addiction according to the strategy of the state to fight the addiction.

Dr. Mohamed Zaki El-Dahshoury-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine accompanied by Dr. Amr Othman-Assistant Minister of Solidarity inspected the building of the Addiction Treatment Center in New Aswan City to ensure the preparation of the building and works on to requalify them and open them to treat the patients of the addiction. 

Dr. Mohamed Zaki Al-Dahshoury added that Aswan Governorate does not have a center for the control and treatment of addiction, while there are 5 centers (Determination) affiliated to the Addiction Control and Treatment Fund at the level of the Republic, which are Port Said, Qena, Hurghada, Marsa Matrouh and Minya. This center is the first of its kind in Aswan Governorate as it includes The center has 60 beds, 2 outpatient clinics, playgrounds, and workshops in different professions to connect them with the labor market to treat addicts and rehabilitate them psychologically, socially, and professionally. The center provides free medical services for patients in Aswan.

Dr. Amr Othman, Assistant Minister of Solidarity and Director of the Anti-Addiction Fund, pointed out that the idea of ​​the project to rehabilitate the Al-Azima Center for Addiction Treatment came from Aswan University and its hospitals as a national initiative to provide treatment to the people of Aswan Governorate, where approximately 2,000 cases from Aswan governorate come to us annually.
The center will be rehabilitated in accordance with international standards for the treatment of addiction patients, where a department is equipped to withdraw narcotics from patients, with the provision of psychologists and sociologists from Aswan University Hospitals and the Faculty of Medicine, to work on rehabilitating patients after treatment for free and to train them through workshops that are equipped to connect them to the labor market The project is expected to be completed within six months from the date of signing the cooperation protocol between the two parties, and this center is the sixth of its kind in the governorates of the Republic for the treatment and control of addiction.

Dr. Ashraf Maabad, Executive Director of Aswan University Hospitals, explained that Aswan University hospitals lack this center for the treatment of addiction, and this comes within the framework of the therapeutic and medical services provided by Aswan University hospitals to patients and the people of Aswan and the governorates of southern Upper Egypt so that the medical system of Aswan University hospitals and specialized centers is completed.
